Youssou N’Dour follows in the footsteps of black slaves and the music they invented: jazz. His goal: to create a jazz repertoire and perform it on Gorée, the island that symbolizes the slave trade, as a tribute to the victims of slavery. Guided in his quest by blind pianist Moncef Genoud, Youssou N’Dour toured the USA and Europe. Together, they crossed paths with a host of personalities, creating an original repertoire in the course of their encounters. From Atlanta to New Orleans, from New York to Luxembourg, the songs are transformed, infused with jazz and gospel. But already the return to Africa is approaching, and much remains to be done afin preparation for the final concert…
Youssou N’Dour part sur les traces des esclaves noirs et de la musique qu’ils ont inventée : le jazz. Son but : créer un répertoire de jazz et le chanter à Gorée, l’île symbole de la traite négrière, en hommage aux victimes de l’esclavage. Guidé dans sa quête par le pianiste aveugle Moncef Genoud, Youssou N’Dour parcourt les USA et l’Europe. Ensemble, ils croisent de nombreuses personnalités et créent, au fil des rencontres, un répertoire inédit. D’Atlanta à New Orléans, de New York à Luxembourg, les chansons se transforment, s’imprègnent de jazz et de gospel. Mais déjà le retour en Afrique approche et beaucoup reste à faire afin d’être prêt pour le concert final…
Youssou N’Dour begibt sich auf die Spuren der schwarzen Sklaven und der Musik, die sie erfunden haben: den Jazz. Sein Ziel: ein Jazz-Repertoire zu kreieren und es in Gorée, der Symbolinsel des Sklavenhandels, zu Ehren der Opfer der Sklaverei zu singen. Auf seiner Suche wird Youssou N’Dour von dem blinden Pianisten Moncef Genoud angeleitet und reist durch die USA und Europa. Gemeinsam begegnen sie zahlreichen Persönlichkeiten und kreieren im film der Begegnungen ein unveröffentlichtes Repertoire. Von Atlanta bis New Orleans, von New York bis Luxemburg verwandeln sich die Lieder und werden von Jazz und Gospel durchdrungen. Aber schon naht die Rückkehr nach Afrika und es bleibt noch viel zu tun, afis man für das finale Konzert bereit sein wird…
